Inlays/Onlays are the next step up from white fillings
Inlays/onlays are strong, durable restorative treatments
Whereas white fillings are composite resin that replace the space left by a gap. These restorations are made from either porcelain or composite material and are great to repair teeth that have suffered moderate amount of decay.
The difference between an inlay and an onlay is that an inlay treats decay within the cusps of a tooth; whereas an onlay treats decay that extends over one or more cusps.
Dental Inlays
Dental inlays treat decay or damage between the cusps of the teeth. Inlays are a popular choice for replacing old or damaged metal fillings. Traditionally, inlays take two appointments however, with the use of CEREC technology we are able to carry out the treatment in just one appointment.
Dental Onlays
Dental onlays are used to treat decay that extends to one or more cusps. They also help conserve tooth structure because they require minimal removal of tooth structure. The biggest advantage of dental onlays is they can prevent the need for treatments such as dental crowns, bridges or implants.
Dental inlays/onlays can be made from composite, porcelain or gold depending on your needs and which tooth is being treated. Since gold is stronger it is usually placed on back teeth where you do most of your chewing. This ensures the inlay lasts longer. It should be noted that the CEREC machine fabricates porcelain restorations in a day so if you require an inlay or onlay made from gold that will take two appointments.
The process
If your inlay/onlay is to be fabricated from porcelain we can use the CEREC/CADCAM technology. This involves taking a digital impression of your tooth and creating the desired restoration on the computer. Then a block of porcelain is placed into the CEREC milling machine and in the same appointment we will be able to place the restoration.
If you require an onlay made from gold it will take two appointments, because we will need to send moulds of your teeth off to the dental lab. There they will fabricate your gold onlay and send it back to us. In the interim, a temporary will be placed. When we receive the gold restoration you will come back to Coast Dental and have the temporary removed and the gold onlay replaced.
