Coast Dental offers fluoride treatment for patients looking to strengthen and protect their teeth

Dentistry offers many options to help patients keep their natural teeth for as long as possible. Whether it’s a filling, root canal therapy or a dental crown we have a range of treatments that can restore a damaged tooth. What we also offer are treatment options to help fight decay and protect a tooth before those treatments become necessary.

One such treatment is fluoride treatment: fluoride is a mineral found in food and water that helps to strengthen teeth and prevent tooth decay. Fluoride does this by making your teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque and sugars. When fluoride is lacking from your diet it can make your teeth more susceptible to tooth decay and cavities.

Fluoride treatments

The surface of the tooth (the enamel) contains mineral crystals that everyday plaque and bacteria weaken. Fluoride, calcium, phosphate and other minerals from toothpaste, food and drink we consume help to strengthen the enamel.

Ways fluoride can be administered

There are at least four ways fluoride can be applied to your teeth:

Food and drink
Supplements
Fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash
Applied directly to the teeth by a dentist or hygienist

Fluoride applied by a dentist or hygienist

Fluoride treatment is usually offered at your general check-up appointment. It’s a simple 3 step process with easy after-care instructions.

Your teeth will be scaled and cleaned.
Then there are two ways the fluoride treatment can be applied to your teeth: either a fluoride gel is placed into trays and inserted and left on your teeth for the required amount of time; or, a fluoride varnish is painted on to the tooth surface.

In order to let the fluoride treatment sink into your teeth you should not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes after treatment.
