Extractions, performed at Coast Dental, are performed to help maintain optimal oral health
Your natural teeth are best for your oral health. Except when your natural teeth are decayed, damaged or impacting the health of your other teeth, your gums and jaw. Instances where this may occur include:
- Trauma
- Injury
- Decay
- Orthodontic extraction
- Dentures
One of our Coast Dental dentists will assess your oral health and determine what the best course of action is for you. If the tooth is beyond saving then we may recommend extraction. For example, if a tooth is cracked and the crack has not gone below the gum line then the tooth may be saved with a dental crown. However, if the crack has gone below the gum line and the tooth root is badly damaged then extraction may be the only option.
Types of extractions
At Coast Dental in Christies Beach there are two methods of extraction.
- Non-surgical extraction
- This form of extraction involves anaesthetic and forceps. However, this is only for teeth that are intact and can be seen above the gum line. The procedure is quick and relatively painless. You’ll be given a local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. Once your tooth and the surrounding area are numb one of our dentists will gently extract the tooth with the forceps. You will feel a slight pressure, and you shouldn’t feel any pain.
- Surgical extraction
- This form of extraction is only performed on teeth that
- Can’t be seen—they are only present below the gum
- Partially showing through the gum
- Broken off at gum level
- This form of extraction is only performed on teeth that
Local anaesthetic will be administered to numb the area before a small incision is made. Your gum is then pulled back in order to expose the whole of the tooth root. Depending on the condition of the tooth the tooth may be removed in one piece or cut into pieces to be removed.
Post-extraction care
A blood clot will form in the socket where the tooth used to be. Do not disturb this blood clot it is very important for the healing process.
