What are dental implants?

Dental implants are metal posts or frames that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once in place, they allow your dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them. While dental bridges and dentures are both effective ways to replace missing teeth, they are not as comprehensive as dental implants. Dental implant treatment involves replacing the tooth root and the tooth crown, whereas dental bridges and dentures only replace the crown of the tooth.

“Coast Dental delivers state-of-the-art facilities with a special interest in dental implants. We have a highly experienced team of professionals and an onsite dental lab with specialist dental technicians for convenient and quality restorations.”

Can a missing tooth be replaced?

When you lose a tooth it affects your jaw, gums and remaining teeth. It also makes the jawbone atrophy and shrink. This means that you lose jawbone density and in extreme cases this can lead to further tooth loss. Additionally, when you lose a tooth, the teeth on either side of the gap shift in an attempt to cover the gap. This results in crooked teeth and a misaligned bite. A misaligned bite can cause jaw problems, headaches and neck pain. Dental implants are the best option for replacing missing teeth.

Dental implant procedure steps

The dental implant procedure starts with a consultation between yourself and your dentist. It’s important to know that getting a dental implant is an extensive process. Dr Grover will discuss the treatment in detail and help explain every stage of the process.

Firstly, your current oral health must be assessed to determine whether you are eligible to begin the implant procedure straight away or whether there are underlying dental concerns that need addressing first. By scanning your mouth we can determine your jawbone density to ensure that your jawbone is strong enough to hold an implant. We will also look at your gums to make sure that they are healthy and can accommodate for your new implant. If you have lost a tooth because of gum disease, the gum disease will need to be treated prior to any restorative dental work.

This appointment is when the dental implant is placed into the site of the missing tooth root. The dental implant is made from bio-compatible titanium so there’s next-to-no chance of your body rejecting the foreign material. After the implant is placed, the jawbone is left to heal around it.

It takes roughly three months for your jawbone to fuse around the dental implant. This is a process known as osseointegration. Once this process is complete the dental implant will act as a strong and sturdy root for a dental crown, bridge or denture. Between your first appointment and the dental crown being placed, anywhere from 4 to 6 months may elapse. This largely depends on how long the osseointegration takes.

Once the jawbone and implant have fused, an abutment will be placed that will be used to attach the dental crown to the dental implant. When your gum has healed around this abutment your dental crown will be attached to the abutment and you will have a strong and sturdy tooth root. The crown is custom made for you by taking an impression of the implant in your mouth and sent away to our laboratory where your new crown is designed.

Benefits of dental implants

They provide comfort: Dental implants are strong, permanent and stay in place.

They improve speaking and eating: Sliding dentures can make speaking and chewing difficult.

They support your health: Implants protect healthy teeth, prevent bone loss and help you keep your natural look.

They are long-lasting: Implants are very durable and with good care many implants last a lifetime.

It is important to keep in mind that dental implants are susceptible to gum disease. As with all restorative and cosmetic dental treatments you need to visit the dentist regularly to ensure you maintain optimal oral hygiene and to ensure the health of your dental implant treatment.

How much do dental implants cost?

The price for dental implants can vary for each patient presenting a completely different case and severity of dental issues. This will be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr. Grover when the appropriate time comes.

A great result every time

Before After

This is how we bring
your smile back

Initial consultation

During your first consultation we take an in-depth look at the existing issues, immediate problems and most importantly – what causes the current dental issues (if there are any). We will also discuss the treatment options, payment plans, your availability and any other things that may concern you.

Treating immediate issues

We first focus on the issues that cause you discomfort or pain. Having that done first ensures that we prevent and monitor any issues that may become worse over time, thus saving you time, money and your teeth!

Treating other dental issues

We then move along the discussed plan, while keeping you informed. This way you know exactly what is happening with every step of the way.

Prevention and oral health management

This is the most important step. Based on your exact dental history we may recommend an array of options to help prevent future issues from occurring. We will also help you manage ongoing issues (if there are any).
