Halitosis, or bad breath, can be a result of poor oral health
30% of australian adults suffer from bad breath
At Coast Dental in Christies Beach we have treated many patients who suffered from bad breath.
What causes bad breath (halitosis)?
Bad breath can be caused by poor oral hygiene habits or oral health problems such as gum disease. The mouth is home to millions of bacteria, and it is these bacteria which feed on food particles giving off a sulphur compound which creates the bad odour.
Habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol can also contribute to the odour. And then there’s coffee. While coffee is delicious it also contains an acid causing bad breath bacteria to reproduce in your mouth: milk only exacerbates the problem.
Why good oral hygiene is so important
When dentists and doctors tell you to brush your teeth on a regular basis; it’s not because we like the sound of our own voice. Brushing and flossing your teeth has a number of health benefits not least of which is keeping your teeth healthy. By not brushing and flossing daily you’re allowing plaque to build up on your teeth. This can result in decay slowly eating away at your teeth, causing gum disease and bad breath.
How often should you brush and floss?
You need to be brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day. Brushing after breakfast and before going to bed are the best times to brush your teeth. The best time to floss is at night. This is because when you sleep your body doesn’t produce as much saliva so your mouth’s natural defence against bacteria is reduced. Improving your oral health is the best way to eliminate bad breath. Other methods to use that can help include:
- Drink lots of water
- Stop smoking
- Chew sugar-free gums after meals
- Eating a well-balanced diet
- Regular dental check-ups
Causes of bad breath which can be treated by a dentist include:
- Decayed teeth
- Gum disease
- Dry mouth—this affects the flow of saliva
If you suffer from bad breath and have good oral health, brush and floss your teeth daily then other reasons you may be suffering bad breath include:
- Diabetes
- Liver problems
- Kidney problems
- Sinusitis and bronchitis
- Problems with the stomach
